AFO'S can be fabricated from high-density thermo plastic ie: polypropylene.
Joint systems can also be incorporated into AFO's to allow dynamics.
Thoraco Lumbar Sacral Orthosis (Bivalve TLSO)
These are the two main types of orthoses used to stabilize the spinal column in post trauma, surgery, etc. The Patient Donn's these orthosis prior to ambulation and seating to reduce risk of compression of the spinal column as well as protection and pain relief.

To have their intended effect, the orthosis must be worn every day for the full number of hours prescribed until the child reaches the end of the program.
(Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis) KAFO
KAFO's are prescribed for a variety of conditions. These conditions can very from congenital (Spina Bifida), Neurological (Charcot Marie Tooth) to traumatic (Spinal Cord Injury).
The design and materials used in the fabrication of KAFO's is related to the individuals needs.
The prescribing Doctor/Physiotherapist and Patient are made aware of what type of KAFO will achieve the needs and goals.
